The lyrics say they welcome all who come. They aren't asking them 2 give up their culture r their language they r simply asking them 2 learn the language of the country they chose 2 live n. If you moved 2 France would you expect them 2 accommodate you? R would you attempt to learn French. It's a linguistics issue. Even Ray Charles on heroin was smart enough to know that.

The signs are for dollars not to accommodate Americans. India's English speaking population is larger than ours. English is spoken by more people in the world than any other language. As for here, it is ignorant of someone to move here & not expect to learn the language over 280M, over 92%, of our citizens speak. And ignorance is in abundance worldwide not just here.

Our medical personnel are losing lives because translators don't fit into budgets & inability to communicate hinders medical care. Our EMT and emergency personnel hindered. Criminals are being released & cases dismissed because translators cannot be found to comply with our speedy trial rules. It is for their benefit as much as ours. Pull your head out of your ass.

    January 9th, 2009 at 11:45:50 Keeping one's heritage and native language should not be something to be ashamed of, nor is it something to be shunned by others. Any signs not being put up in english obviously does not have the native english speakers as a target audience. As a Chinese immigrant, I have long lost my ability to read and write Chinese. I can barely hold a conversation in my native tongue, and sometimes, I really do regret losing my heritage.

    January 9th, 2009 at 13:17:46 This makes a good point, but it is important not to forget that America was founded upon the idea that everyone was welcome, regardless of race, religion, origin, or economic class. I have been all over europe and in most places, they have english signs and audio after the native language. It is not unrealistic to suggest that foriegners living in America should learn to speak and understand english, however this is not an excuse to exude the American ignorance that the world has come to expect.

Unlike many others they immigrated LEGALLY and learned to speak, read and write English. When Americans travel over seas we are looked down upon because we expect every to speak English for us. While is it acceptable for other countries to look down on us for not speaking their native tougue when the tables are turned Americans are "Proud" and "Racists". Seems like a double standard to me.

Meanwhile we're going broke here in California paying for programs to provide medical treatment, education, childcare, etc for the population of illegal immigrants that just keep arriving every single day.The States that border Mexico are going bankrupt over this problem.
