Rick Wright Tribute - 7 pieces piano medley - "The Great RICK In The Sky"

Posted by Admin on Friday, 9 January, 2009 @

THE GREAT RICK IN THE SKY - MEDLEY OF 7 PIECES - A PIANO TRIBUTE TO RICHARD WRIGHT OF PINK FLOYD By Giorgio Rizzarelli (Urbania70). Medley assembly, transcription/adaption for solo piano, live performance and video editing realized between September 15 and October 23, 2008. SPOKEN INTRO TEXT: Hi YouTube watchers, especially Pink Floyd fans. As most of you know, the band's keyboardist and founder member Richard Wright passed away on September 15th. The other members describe him as the most reserved and modest. Actually, though his jazz abilities, he invented an essential style. Besides playing keyboards, Wright gave important contributions as a writer (and sometimes as a vocalist), some of which are remembered in this piano cover medley. Richard Wright died at 65 and, as he had kept privacy about his illness, these news came suddenly. It's sad to know that, if another reunion will be done (after the one at Live8), he will not join it. As many keyboardists, I learned from his style. TRACKLIST The Great Gig In The Sky (Wr, Torry) Breathe (G, Wa, Wr) Echoes (M, G, Wa, Wr) Time (G, Wa, Wr, M) Us And Them (Wa, Wr) Cluster One (G, Wr) (b) Wearing The Inside Out (Wr, Moore) G=Gilmour, M=Mason, Wa=Waters, Wr=Wright Wright performs lead vocals on Meddle (with Gilmour), Wearing The Inside Out, the Time bridge. All excerpts are from "The Dark Side Of The Moon" except the last two which are from "The Division Bell", and "Echoes" which is from "Meddle". By choice I performed "The Great Gig In The Sky" faithfully to the album, though Wright did it live more freely. The superimposed text is spoken in the original version; by the way one of the song working titles was "The Mortality Sequence". "Wearing The Inside Out" features a free interpretation as part of my personal tribute. "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" (also co-written by Wright) is quoted briefly (at the end) to avoid too much slow music, stay in the 10mins available, and... well, that's rather for Syd. A big thank you to: - AlecLovesGenialMusic for special moral support, technical support, tracklist revising, sharing and linking on various PF forums - danbergam special technical support, sharing - Pino (leader of Lab70, one of the first Italian Floydian bands) for tracklist revising - albetazza1985, milaraven and joeneil69 for sharing Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Wright for special words by all other surviving PF members. ----------- Forgive the Far West piano: don't shoot the pianist! Recently the piano aging problems raised drastically: a crack in the table, hammer hardness, fast untuning. I plan to buy a new one and possibly re-record this video on it in future, but it's one month from Rick's passing so I decided to publish this version anyway. ----------- FAIR USE NOTICE: This post may contain copyrighted material the use of which has not always been specifically authorized by the copyright owner. The Chameleons - Swamp Thing

Posted by Admin on Friday, 9 January, 2009 @

From Wikipedia: "The Chameleons (called The Chameleons UK on some American releases) were a dream pop/post-punk band that formed in Middleton, in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England in 1981 (see 1981 in music). They consisted of singer and bassist Mark Burgess, guitarist Reg Smithies, guitarist Dave Fielding, drummer John Lever as well as keyboardists Alistair Lewthwaite and Andy Clegg. Their body of work is still critically acclaimed within the music press and influenced bands as diverse as The Smiths, Protokoll, The Comsat Angels, Puressence, Interpol, Editors.[1] Through Mark Burgess' penetrating vocals and dark and ironic lyrics, their songs often dealt with personal themes of childlike innocence and a reverence for nostalgia. Musically, perhaps most notable in their work was the band's innovative and distinctive use of dual guitar melodies, courtesy of Reg Smithies and Dave Fielding, as opposed to the traditional rhythm-and-lead guitarist format prevalent in rock music even to this day. These arrangements were often characterized by the use of delay and choral effects. The Chameleons' unique sound is quite often compared to U2's The Edge."

National Health : experimental prog fusion group

Posted by Admin on Friday, 9 January, 2009 @

National Health was a progressive rock band associated with the Canterbury Scene. Founded in 1975 by keyboardists Dave Stewart (from Hatfield and the North) and Alan Gowen (from Gilgamesh), the band also included guitarists Phil Miller and Phil Lee and bassist Mont Campbell as original members. Bill Bruford was the initial drummer but was soon replaced by Pip Pyle. Campbell was replaced by Neil Murray and then John Greaves. A frequently changing lineup toured extensively and released two LPs of often lengthy, mostly instrumental, complexly scored compositions before splitting up in 1980. After the May 1981 death of Gowen, remaining members reconvened to record the album D.S. Al Coda, a set of compositions by Gowen, most previously unrecorded. The original albums and additional archival material have subsequently been released on CD. Their 1978 record Of Queues and Cures, which included Peter Blegvad (guitar, vocals) and Georgie Born (cello), is currently held as the third best record ever (of 53,000 candidate records) on the Gnosis web site. wikipedia weird shit, i like it.

Klymaxx - Man Size Love

Posted by Admin on Friday, 9 January, 2009 @

This song is from the soundtrack for the 1986 movie, 'Running Scared'. Klymaxx is a female R&B/Funk Band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1979. The group consisted of drummer Bernadette Cooper, vocalist Lorena Porter, bassist Joyce 'Fenderella' Irby, keyboardists Lynn Malsby and Robbin Grider and guitarist Cheryl Cooley. Klymaxx became the first and last all-female band in R&B/Funk music to all play an instrument. Their string of hits from the 1980s include: Men All Pause, Meeting In The Ladies Room, I Miss You, Man Size Love, Divas Need Love Too, I Still Say Yes (which was written by Babyface). Their only hit from the 1990s was the new jack swing influenced song, 'Good Love' in 1990. Bernadette Cooper and Joyce Irby left in 1989 to pursue solo careers. Cooper formed the female singing groups, Madame X and Altitude in the late 80s. Irby was responsible for starting the career of current R&B artist, Lloyd. Lloyd was once a member of the short lived teen-group, N-Toon, which was put together by Irby and signed to her record label in the mid 1990s. The original members of Klymaxx have recently reunited and have been perforning at venues around the country during the 2000s.

michael w. smith & amy grant - somewhere somehow

Posted by Admin on Friday, 9 January, 2009 @

Michael Whitaker Smith has become one of the most enduringly popular artists on the Christian Contemporary Music front and is also finding considerable success as a mainstream artist. He was born in Kenova, West Virginia, the son of an oil refinery worker and a caterer. He became a devout Christian at age ten and spent his teens hanging around with a solid support group of fellow believers who frequently gathered to play and make music. After high school, that support group split up, and Smith turned to alcohol, drugs and wild times. He scraped through a couple semesters of college and began honing his songwriting skills. In 1978, a songwriting company expressed interest in his songwriting, and he moved to Nashville, where he played with local bands, including Rose. He was still heavily into drugs and continued using until October 1979, when he suffered a sort of emotional mental breakdown that culminated in recommitting to Christ. The next day he auditioned for a new CCM group, Higher Ground, as a keyboardist. While touring with them, Smith cleaned up his act. In 1981, he signed to Meadowgreen Music as a staff writer, where over the next few years he provided gospel hits for such artists as Sandi Patti, Kathy Troccoli, Bill Gaither and Amy Grant. He began touring as a keyboardist with Grant in 1982 and the following year, after releasing his first album, The Michael W. Smith Project, became her opening act. His debut album garnered him a Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Performance. Smith became a headliner following the release of his second album, Michael W. Smith 2. Afterwards, he changed musical directions and began recording more rock-oriented music in order to reach a younger audience. As a result, some of his songs became more secular and began breaking through to mainstream audiences. His first real shot at mainstream music came in 1991 when his label, Reunion Records, allowed Geffen Records to distribute his albums. They chose a two-pronged promo campaign with ads designed to appeal to both CCM audiences and to the mainstream pop audience. This has caused some controversy among his more religious fans, who feared that Smith was selling out to the more lucrative secular market, but Smith saw it differently, claiming that he is really only trying to get his message out to a wider audience and to help young people. Over his career, Smith has won both Dove and Grammy Awards, has topped Billboard charts and has been hailed by Keyboard magazine as one of the top keyboardists in rock. Continuing his musical reign into the new millennium, Michael W. Smith had sold more than seven million records and had 25 number one hits. And Smith's undying commitment to music came with his first instrumental record entitled Freedom. This album, which was recorded in Ireland, featured backing from the Irish Film Orchestra Limited and contained Smith's personal songs composed with his classic piano arrangements. The live albums Worship and Worship Again arrived in 2001and 2002. 2004 saw the release of Healing Rain, Smith's first recording of new studio material since the turn of the millenium. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Music Guide

To date three albums have been released, with the debut Soldier more a solo project album, with a proper band fleshed out in time for the followup, Beyond Abilities. The star here, of course, is Warman, as he proves himself an exemplary keyboardist, though he rarely resorts to pointlessly showing off.

Pink Floyd Arnold Lane

Posted by Admin on Friday, 9 January, 2009 @

"Arnold Layne" was the first single released by British Psychedelic rock group Pink Floyd, shortly after landing a recording contract with EMI. The song was written by Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd's co-founder and original front man. Although not included on the band's debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (though it is included on the bonus disc of the CD version), many consider "Arnold Layne" to be one of the finest psychedelic pop songs of its time. The song The song's title character is a transvestite whose primary pastime is stealing women's clothes and undergarments from washing lines. According to Roger Waters, "Arnold Layne" was actually based on a real person, and that this person routinely stole underwear from the mothers of Barrett and Waters during their childhood days in Cambridge. However, despite finding a place in the Top 20, the song's unusual transvestism theme attracted the ire of Radio London, which deemed the song too far-removed from "normal" society for its listeners before eventually banning it from radio airplay altogether.[1] Producer Norman Smith wanted the band to re-record the Joe Boyd-produced song after they had signed up with EMI. While Waters and keyboardist Richard Wright were willing to do this, Barrett, on the other hand, was entirely satisfied with the existing studio cut, and argued against recording another version. Attempts were made to re-record the song at the insistence of EMI (who at the time only wanted to use in-house producers) but, perhaps due to Barrett's indifference to doing so, the re-recordings never got very far and the Boyd-produced session was used. Boyd mentioned in several interviews over the years that "Arnold Layne" regularly ran for 10 to 15 minutes in concert (with extended instrumental passages), but the band knew that it had to be shortened for use as a single. A black and white promotional film of "Arnold Layne" was made the same year, and featured members of Pink Floyd dressing up a mannequin before showing it around a beach. Recently, an alternative promotional film was unearthed, which featured the band goofing around in a forest and in front of a church. It is also the only known footage of Syd Barrett lip synching to the song. The band Blur used the song to inspire their own, called "Ernold Same", or so it seems

Jim Morrison of The Doors in a 1964 Promo Video for FSU

Jim Morrison as you've never seen him... Clean cut and dressed in a suit. Morrison briefly attended FSU (before going to UCLA Film School) and participated in this promotional video for the college. Within a year after this, he would meet The Doors' keyboardist, Ray Manzarek, and the rest is history. NOTE: The next time Jim would be back in Florida is 5 years later (1969) at the infamous Miami concert where he would be charged with indecent exposure and reckless behavior. :)
